How Search Engines Work

The Truth About
Meta Tags
The term "search engine" is a loosely used term
often applied to describe both Spider or Crawler based search
engines and internet directories that are created with human
intervention. Directories are not true "Search Engines",
but they accomplish the same thing. The end user really doesn't
care how they achieve the results, just that they get what
they are looking for. Although they both set out to accomplish
the same goal, they work quite differently.
Spiders and other Creepy Crawlers
True search engines, such as HotBot, use "spidering"
or "crawling" technology to automatically create
their listings. They "crawl" or "spider"
the web, looking for what the user is searching for. For the
sake of simplicity, I will use the term "Spider"
from here on to represent both. They essentially do the same
thing and besides that, I just like the word better.
As you change your pages and add new content, these search
engines will eventually find those changes. This, in turn
can affect how your ranking. Page titles and actual content
become increasingly important here.
Here is how they work: First, the spider visits the site,
reads it, and then follows links to other pages within the
site. The spider then returns to the site according to that
search engines settings and looks for changes. The spidered
information must then go to what is known as the "Index"
or "Catalog".
Search engine software is the final, crucial part of a search
engine. This is how the program searches through content in
the index to find, match and rank what the user is searching
for. To learn more about how different engines rank their
web pages, click here.
Internet Directories
Internet directories such as Yahoo!, depend on human intervention
for its listings. You are usually asked to select the proper
category for your site (a difficult task at times) and then
submit a short description of your site. Sometimes it is left
up to the editor of that particular category to describe your
site.
These directories often require payment in order to be reviewed
within 1-2 weeks. Some require payment in order to be reviewed
at all. Some still offer free reviews, but with no time guarantee.
It can take as long as 90 days or more to get listed in these
directories, if you can get listed at all. You have to keep
in mind that even if you pay their fee to have your site reviewed,
that does NOT guarantee that they will actually list your
site.
The things that help improve your ranking on a true search
engine, are not necessarily the things that will improve your
ranking on a directory. Here is where good content, fast loading
designs, user and browser friendly pages and properly optimized
graphics all come in to play. Here, you must remember that
this is a REAL PERSON reviewing your site and thousands of
others.
Using Both Technologies
With the vast numbers of web sites being added to the internet
everyday, some Directories have combined with spidering technology.
They usually organize them in a way that presents the directory
listings first and then presents the spidered results.
